Making Your Garden More Gopher Resistant

Plant Gopher Resistant Plants

While some plants are very attractive to gophers, other plants are extremely resistant to this garden pest.To make your garden more resistant to gophers, you can plant vegetation that gophers do not like to eat. Some common examples of gopher resistant plants include artemesia, ceanothus, foxglove, lantana, bamboo, rosemary, and perennial salvia. These plants are both attractive and highly resistant to a gopher infestation.

Create Gopher Resistant Beds

If you would prefer to cultivate plants that are not gopher resistant, you can take steps to prevent gophers from touching them. To prevent gophers from munching on your favorite plants, you can create gopher resistant garden beds. When you create a new garden bed, you can first line the bottom of the bed with hardware cloth or metallic mesh. This will create a barrier that prevents gophers from entering the soil.

Encourage Natural Predators

To keep gophers out of your yard, you can encourage the presence of their natural predators. Gophers are a favored food source of birds of prey such as barn owls. To scare gophers away from your yard, you can install barn owl nesting boxes on your property. Once the owls take up residence, you may notice a reduction in your gopher problem.
